REPORT: Aduana, Kotoko and 8 Ghana referees in Caf inter-club actions

It’s busy weekend for Ghanaian clubs and match officials alike as the 2018 Caf inter-club competitions get underway.

Talk about clubs, Ghana has just a slot in either of the two competitions – the Caf Champions League which will have 2016/17 league winners Aduana Stars looking to make serious impact while sleeping giants Asante Kotoko make a return in the Caf Confederation Cup.

Aduana Stars kick off their campaign on the road against Libya’s Al-Tahaddy Benghazi while Kotoko host Cara Brazzaville from Congo in Kumasi on Sunday.

Referees

As many as eight Ghanaian referees in two sets have been appointed to handle two of the preliminary round games in the inter-club competitions.

On Saturday, the Caf Champions League will see the quartet of Reginald Lathbridge, Dawood Ouedraogo, Eric Nantiere and Issaka Afful in action. They will take charge of the match at Stade Robert Champroux in nearby Ivory Coast between AS Tanda and CA Mancha of Congo.

Lathbridge is the centre referee while Ouedraogo and Nantiere serve as assistants. Issaka has been handed the Reserve Referee role but the Match Commissioner, David Yameogo Koudougou is from Burkina Faso.

Also, the very experienced Cecil Fleischer will lead another group of four Ghanaian referees in the Confederation Cup. Fleischer has been named centre referee for the preliminary round first leg between Burkina Faso Champions Rail Club de Kadiogo and CF Mounana from Gabon. He will receive help on the lines from David Agyin and Ibrahim Adam Badiu. Prosper Awontiirim Adii is fourth official while Omar Diop from Senegal acts as Match Commissioner.
