GFA Extra-Ordinary Congress to decide on 18-team league

The Ghana Football Association president Kwesi Nyantakyi has revealed that the FA will organize an extra-ordinary congress to consider proposals from the Executive Committee to organize an 18-team league to replace the current 16-team championship.

At the last congress, the Ex-Co failed to meet the time frame to submit the proposal and subsequently could not push the matter to congress. But Nyantakyi said there’s another opportunity for the issue to be considered.

“The Executive Committee was supposed to bring a proposal but the proposal was out of time. And so we told Ex-Co to re-submit the proposal at the extra-ordinary congress and congress will take a decision on that,” Nyantakyi said.

Proposals for an 18-team Ghana premier league has been on the cards for a while now after legal tussles have now ensured clubs outside the 16-team league can make claims for a place in the league if they win their respective cases. King Faisal Babes is a notable example. The FA has signed an undertaking to reinstate the Kumasi-based side to the premier league if they win their outstanding court case against the FA.
