2019 AfconQ: Kasarani Stadium ready to host Kenya vs Ghana

The Moi International Sports Centre (MISC) in Kasarani will host the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) Group F qualifier between Kenya and Ghana on September 7.

Over a month ago, reports from the Eastern Africa nation suggested Kenya might be forced to look for alternative venue in neighbouring countries to host the Black Stars.

This was as a result of the slow pace in construction works at the Moi International Sports Centre (MISC), Kasarani and Nyayo Stadiums while the Machakos-based Kenyatta Stadium had been ruled out from hosting continental matches on security grounds.

The renovation works in Kasarani was initially set to be completed at the end of March. But works were behind schedule, drawing public outrage against the Kenya’s Sports Ministry. The outcry seemed to have worked as constructors doubled their efforts with day and night schedules.

And on May 13, the stadium in Kasarani finally opened and hosted a friendly between local side Gor Mahia and English club Hull City. A Caf Confederation Cup group stage game between Gor Mahia and USM Alger was subsequently played at the same venue on May 16.

The Kenya national team will also host two international friendlies at the same venue this month as part of preparations to face Ghana in September. In a bid to keep the venue in shape, the stadium has been closed to local football with the exception of Gor Mahia’s Confederation Cup campaign.

The Moi International Sports Centre in Kasarani is a 60,000 seat facility.
