The President Akufo-Addo-led Ghana government has pledged not to interfere in matters relating to the running of football in the country.
Ahmad Ahmad, the recently elected President of the Confederation of African Football (Caf) is on a four-day working visit to Ghana.
Led by his first-vice and leader of the Ghana Football Association Kwesi Nyantakyi, Dr. Ahmad and his entourage paid a courtesy call on the presidency at the Flagstaff House Friday where they were hosted by vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
During their interaction, the Ghana Veep acknowledged that the football is the most patronized sport in the country and that the government will continue to support its development.
“There’s passion for the game, there’s interest in the game and that interest amongst our people is also translated into the interest by the government.
“We want to make sure soccer does well and football is governed properly and so on and so, we’ll do everything in our capacity for the development of football,” he stated.
“We don’t really want to interfere in the management of football, but we want to provide the environment for that management to benefit the country. So we have very high expectations of the administrators of football,” Dr. Bawumia added.
The Caf delegation attended the Alhaji Sly Tetteh Memorial Lectures in Accra on Friday evening.
A Caf Executive Committee meeting will then follow at the Tang Palace Hotel in Accra from 10am on Saturday, September 23 with some key decisions on African football expected to be taken.
On Sunday, Caf President Dr. Ahmad will lead his delegation to Cape Coast where they will watch the final match of the 2017 Wafu Cup of Nations tournament between Ghana and Nigeria.
