Report: Two countries on standby to replace Kenya as CHAN 2018 hosts

The Confederation of African Football (Caf) has reportedly penciled down Morocco and South Africa to take over as hosts of the 2018 Championship of Nations (CHAN) should Kenya prove incapable of hosting the 16-team tournament.

Caf has major concerns about Kenya’s readiness to host the biennial event and the country is believed to be running behind schedule.

Coupled with the political situation in the country, Kenya could be stripped of the hosting rights just five months to the start of the competition.

Caf will send an inspection team to Kenya on 28th August, after which a decision will be taken on whether to allow the East African country to host the competition or give it to either South Africa or Morocco who are both believed to have ready facilities to host the competition.

South Africa stepped in as host of Afcon 2013 after political crises forced original host Libya to relinquish their hosting rights while Morocco pulled out of hosting Afcon 2015 due to the Ebola crises.

The 2018 CHAN billed for Kenya comes off from January 11 to February 2, 2018.
