Messi v. Ronaldo debate: Nigerian stabs friend to death in India

A 34-year-old Nigerian was stabbed to death allegedly by his inebriated roommate and fellow countryman, following an argument over footballers Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.

As the victim, Obinna Durumchukwu, was celebrating his 34th birthday on Saturday, he and the accused, Michael Chukwuma (22), were partying at their rented flat at Mahesh building, Ostwal Nagri, Nalasopara (east). The celebrations went on till 9 am on Sunday, when they decided to play football in the common balcony on the building’s third floor. Both were drunk.

While playing, they argued over whether Ronaldo or Messi was a better footballer. The argument turned ugly when Obinna allegedly hurled an empty glass liquor bottle at Michael. The bottle missed Michael, hit a wall and smashed into pieces. Michael then picked up a glass piece and slashed Obinna’s neck. He died on the spot.

Neighbours who heard the screams alerted the Tuling police. Michael, meanwhile, ran to the fourth floor, from where he was arrested.

The Tuling police said that both Obinna and Michael’s passports had expired this year and they has been staying in the country illegally. While Obinna’s passport expired on January 24, Michael’s passport expired on Sunday. He will be produced at a Vasai court on Monday.
