Jordan Ayew credits Ghana mates for Afcon form

Jordan Ayew says his goal-scoring form is nothing surprising as he continues to enhance his reputation as lead striker for Ghana at the ongoing 2019 Africa Cup of Nations finals.

The England-based striker made it two classy goals in three games as the Black Stars advanced to the Round of 16 with a 2-0 victory over Guinea-Bissau last Tuesday.

Heading into the tournament, there had been doubts about Jo Ayew’s prowess in filling in the big shoes of the legendary Asamoah Gyan who was always going to only play a bit-part role in Egypt.

And after the group stage, it is no longer of can he as Ayew has significantly pushed his case as having ‘arrived’

Number of goals? “I don’t even know the number of goals I have scored [for Ghana]. I’m always about teamwork because without my mates who provide those great passes, I cannot score those kind of goals,” said the Swansea City striker who has now tallied 16 international goals.

Ayew maintains how good he has been so far is no surprise.

“I’m not surprised because I have confidence in myself,” he told reporters ahead of the Black Stars’ training session Thursday afternoon.

“I know that I just need to keep on working hard. People are now seeing [what] I’ve always known I’m capable of.

“It’s not a surprise to me; maybe it’s a surprise to a lot of people but not to me,” he noted.

Jordan will be hoping to improve his blistering form when Ghana takes on Tunisia in the final Round of 16 match on Monday.
