Sam Asamoah ditches Ghana, named in Togo squad

Togo coach Claude Le Roy has named midfielder Samuel Asamoah in his 22-man squad to host neighbours Benin in the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying on September 9.

The 24-year-old of Ghanaian father and Togolese mother earlier in August pledged his international future to the latter.

Experienced Togo coach Le Roy had met Asamoah who features for Belgian topflight side Sint-Truiden in Brussels last February to convince the player to represent the Sparrow Hawks.

Following assurances of his availability, Asamoah has been included among seven debutants for the game slated for Lomé.

He arrives with goalkeeper Fadil Assoumanou, defenders James Olufade, Messan Toudji of Angels, other midfielders – Thomas Wogodo and Bilali Akoro as well as young striker Kevin Denkey.

Team captain Emmanuel Adebayor and other experienced stars like Djene Dakonam, Floyd Ayité and Lalawele Atakora are included in the squad to chase for Togo’s first three points after a false start in the qualifiers last year.
