Ethiopia hire Abraham Mebratu as new coach

Abraham Mebratu has been appointed as new coach of the Ethiopia national team, Walia Ibex.

The 48-year-old former boss of war-torn Yemen came tops of a five-man shortlist which included Webetu Abate, Gebremedhin Haile, Seyoum Kebede and Tsegaye Kidanemariam.

According to reports, the new Ethiopia coach will be on a $4,500 (125,000 Birr) monthly salary for the next two years.

Mebratu, a Caf coaching instructor, is taking over from Ashenafi Bekele who resigned from the job in December 2017.

He has been tasked to ensure the Walia Ibex qualify for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon.

Ethiopia are in the same group, F, with Ghana, Sierra Leone and East African neighbours Kenya. They were thrashed 5-0 by the Black Stars in their opening game in the Afcon qualifiers.

Abraham Mebratu’s first game comes when Ethiopia hosts Sierra Leone in August.
