Wafu Women’s Cup: Black Queens outscore Burkina, make last four

Knowing anything but a win spells doom for their Wafu B Women’s Cup campaign, Ghana stepped up to the plate in their must-win final group game against Burkina Faso on Sunday.

The Black Queens defeated their Burkinabe counterparts 4-1 in the decisive encounter at Parc des Sport de Treichville.

Portia Boakye, who would hit a brace, scored the opener in the 25th minute.

On 39 minutes, Grace Asantewaa made it 2-0 for coach Mercy Tagoe-Quarcoo’s side.

In the second half, Priscilla Okyere extended the lead to 3-0 but Burkina pulled one back through Salimata Simporé.

Portia Boakye then capped off a deserved 4-1 win with her second goal. She won the woman-of-the-match award.

Burkina Faso’s goalkeeper Kounda Zenab could not complete the game as she had to be rushed to the hospital via an ambulance after picking up an injury.

Ghana advance to the semifinals alongside hosts Cote d’Ivoire who also registered a 7-0 victory over Niger in the other group match. The Ivorians finished as Group A winners with 7 points.
