Next Senegal president? Diouf keen to follow Weah steps

Senegal great, El Hadji Diouf is still keen on becoming the president of his country in the nearest future after going into politics full time.

The retired former Liverpool striker and twice Africa Footballer of the Year (2001 and 2002) initially declared his political intention early last year despite undertaking some “high-level coaching courses.”

Diouf, who retired in 2015, then revealed plans to turn his back on management in favour of becoming an MP in his native Senegal.

With another African football legend, George Weah succeeding in his presidential ambition in Liberia, Diouf told Accra-based Class FM in an interview that he is encouraged and steadily focusing on his political journey back home.

“I am looking after myself and my family. For many years, I used to think about football but I have a new career and it is a political career,” the controversial Diouf said.

Diouf reiterates his desire to help his people, especially the youth, caused him to choose the path.

“I have taken the decision to do politics because I have people waiting for me to change things in my country and I am ready to do that because I want to be the solider of the youngsters,” he explained.
