Marc Wilmots quits Ivory Coast job after failed World Cup bid

Belgian Marc Wilmots has stepped down as coach of Ivory Coast after failing to qualify for the 2018 Fifa World Cup.

Wilmots revealed his departure on Twitter late Tuesday, three days after the Elephants were stunned at home by Morocco who beat them 2-0 in Abidjan to book their place at the Russia finals.

The 48-year-old, who was appointed by the African giants in March this year, said he reached a mutual agreement to part ways with the Ivorian Football Federation.

“Today it was decided by mutual agreement to terminate the collaboration with @FIFCI_tweet. I want to thank you fans, players, staff & leaders and wish you the best for the future,” Wilmots originally tweeted in French.

With four defeats, a win and a draw in Group C of the African qualifiers, the star-studded Ivory Coast failed to make it a fourth consecutive appearance at the Fifa World Cup.
