IN SEARCH FOR GREENER PASTURES: 16 Ghanaians in Ethiopian League as new season kicks off

Hawassaa – As many as 16 Ghana nationals are expected to be in action as the new Ethiopian Premier League season kicks off Saturday, November 4.

The 16-team league will starts today with three matches.

This year’s edition is 21st since its overhaul to the present form.

The Ethiopian league is home to nearly 60 foreign players from 15 African and Caribbean nations.

This season, Ghanaian players dominate the league with other players coming from Ivory Coast and Mali.

Per Footy-Ghana.com’s last count, there are 16 Ghanaian players in the league for this new campaign.


They include:

  • Kennedy Ashia, Latif Mohammed and Michael Annan (Sidama Bunna)
  • Michael Akuffo and Masalachi Baba Adam (Mekelle Ketema)
  • Seidu Bancey and Alex Amuzu (Abra Minch City)
  • Abdul Rahman Fasuni (Welwalo)
  • Daniel Agyei (Jimma Aba Jifar)
  • Kalusha Alhassan (Ethio-Electric)
  • Kwame Attram, Hamza Mohammed and Emmanuel Sarbah Laryea (Dire-Dawa Kenema)

There were only three Ghanaian players – Adamu Mohammed (Woldia), Kweku Andoh (Dedebit) and Gabriel Jetro (Hawassa City) in the Ethiopian Premier League the previous season.

Dedebit vs Woliyta Dicha – Addis-Ababa Stadium

Tuesday

Ethio-Electric vs Defence Force – Addis-Ababa Stadium

Postponed

St. George vs Dire-Dawa Kenema

Ethiopia Buna vs Sidama Buna

The postponed matches are due to the national team’s Chan 2018 playoff game against Rwanda on Sunday as more than 3 players from St. George and Ethiopia Buna have been called to national team duty.

St. George is the most successful club in the Ethiopian league with a record 14 titles while Hawassa Kenema and Ethio-Electric have each won it twice. Ethiopia Buna and Dedebit also have one league title win to their credit.
