Daniel Bennett: Caf drops referee from Champions League match

South African referee Daniel Bennett, whose bad blunder cost Ghana victory in a 2018 Fifa World Cup qualifier away to Uganda in Kampala, is beginning to pay the price.

The Confederation of African Football (Caf) has sidelined him from handling the Champions League second semifinal clash between Egypt’s Al Ahly and Tunisian giants Etoile du Sahel.

Bennet had been marked for the game at the Borg El Arab Stadium in Alexandria on October 22.

But his performance in the Uganda-Ghana game, where he denied the visitors two clean goals and what appeared a blatant penalty, has caused the refereeing body of Caf to take immediate sanctions.

Another South African referee, Victor Gomes will instead take charge of the crunch inter-club clash between the North Africans. Gomes will be assisted by compatriots Johannes Sello Moshidi and Lindikhaya Bolo.

Daniel Bennett could face more sanctions should Fifa consider the protest lodged against the experienced referee by the Ghana Football Association last weekend.
