2016 Women’s Afcon: Black Queens share spoils with Super Falcons

The Black Queens of Ghana on Wednesday played a 1-1 draw with defending champions Super Falcons in the 2016 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon).

The Nigerians who have been nemesis to the Ghanaian side has defeated the Black Queens three times to win this competition in 1998, 2002 and 2006.

The two teams are in Group B of the competition and are battling for a semifinal spot after both of them convincingly won their respective first group games.

The Nigerians scored first through striker Asisat Oshoala with a deflected free kick in the 19th minute. Ghana got the needed equalizer on the stroke of halftime through a spot-kick which was expertly taken by captain Elizabeth Addo after Portia Boakye was fouled in the penalty box by Nigeria’s Onome Ebi.

Despite the draw the Nigerians still lead Group B with four points but with a superior goal difference.

Ghana will now face Mali in the final group game on Saturday while Nigeria take on Kenya.

In the other group game, Mali defeated Kenya by 3-1 later on Wednesday.

Ghana will play Mali in the third group game on Saturday, 26th November 2016 while Nigeria will take on Kenya.
