Atsu ruled out for the rest of Afcon 2019 with hamstring injury

Christian Atsu will miss the rest of Ghana’s campaign at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations finals after sustaining a hamstring injury.

The Newcastle United winger felt a strain at the back of his right thigh and was subbed off just 15 minutes into last Saturday’s barren draw with Cameroon.

Atsu had to be taken to Cairo from the team’s base in Ismailia for scans on the severity of the injury.

“The doctor took Atsu for a scan and Jonathan as well who also picked up an injury. We will have today’s training and we wait for the full report.

“According to the doctor, Atsu doesn’t look good…,” Appiah said at his pre-match press conference Monday morning.

It has now been confirmed that the 27-year-old will play no further part in the Black Stars’ campaign at the Afcon and has been permitted to leave camp to undergo further tests and treatment in England.

Christian Atsu was not present at Ghana’s final training session ahead of their make-or-break tie with Guinea-Bissau scheduled for Suez on Tuesday.

In a related injury report from Monday’s training session in Suez, winger Thomas Agyepong continued his recovery from a muscle strain in Ghana’s opening game by going through special drills alongside centre-back Jonathan Mensah who picked up an injury against Cameroon.
