Afcon 2019: Appiah downplays Cameroon dominance over Ghana

Ghana coach Kwasi Appiah says the dominance of Cameroon over the country in the Africa Cup of Nations will have no bearing on Saturday’s game in Ismailia.

The Black Stars have confronted the Indomitable Lions four times from 1982 and the best they have achieved is two group draws while suffering two semifinal defeats.

In their last meeting, Cameroon beat Ghana 2-0 in the semifinal of the 2017 Afcon and went ahead to win the competition – their 5th title.

But Appiah maintains: “The mere fact that you beat a team last year does not guarantee you another win in the next match.”

“I believe that all teams are playing at the highest level [so] we have total respect for all. Every team that we meet, we plan a strategy to face them.

“The good thing is Ghana and Cameroon, no one can underrate the other. We will do all our best and make sure we give them a very good game,” he added in his pre-match notes.

Cameroon were the more impressive performers in the opening games in Group F last Tuesday. Clarence Seedorf’s side scored twice in three minutes to end the resistance of Guinea-Bissau and win 2-0 while Ghana had John Boye red-carded as they were held 2-2 by Benin.

Kickoff for the Ghana-Cameroon clash at the Ismailia Stadium is 17:00 GMT.
