Afcon 2019: Ghana injury blow as Agyepong is ruled out of Cameroon clash

Thomas Agyepong has been declared unfit for Ghana’s crucial tie with defending champions Cameroon in the ongoing 2019 Africa Cup of Nations finals.

The diminutive winger has failed to shake off knocks he picked in the 2-2 opening draw with Benin last Tuesday.

Agyepong had to be substituted just 35 minutes into his Nations Cup debut against the Squirrels after coming off worse in some tackles in the game

In an injury report ahead of the Black Stars second game, the Ghana FA announced that the Manchester City player will play no part in Saturday’s game at Ismailia Stadium.

“Further medical test reveal that Agyepong will not be available for selection for the Cameroon game,” it read.

Meanwhile, team captain André Ayew may have to wait for a late fitness test to determine his involvement in the Indomitable Lions clash.

The Ghana record Afcon scorer – now with 9 goals – was substituted late in the game against Benin as a “precautionary measure” but has since been in some discomfort which has prevented him from taking part of the team’s training sessions on Wednesday and Thursday.

The Ghana FA report also said: “… the medical team are monitoring Dede’s condition and will advise the technical team regarding his availability depending on how he responds to treatment.”

Ghana, with a point from their opening game, face Cameroon who beat Guinea-Bissau 2-0 next. The second Group F fixture is scheduled for the Ismailia Stadium on Saturday.
