Afcon 2019: Algeria desire to go far for the title, says coach

Algeria coach Djamel Belmadi says his side will do their best at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) in Egypt, stressing that the tournament would be very tough especially with the presence of heavyweights like Senegal and Morocco.

“We are not the only side who are chasing the title,” Belmadi told Algerian newspaper El-Heddaf on Sunday.

“There are other sides who are also targeting the title such as Senegal and Morocco.

“Senegal have almost kept their team unchanged in three years. The same applies to Morocco, who played with the same players under the guidance of coach Herve Renard for long time, which is not our case.”

But Belmadi, who took charge of Algeria last August, insisted his side are up to the task ahead.

“It is true that Morocco and Senegal have a good advantage but we are ready for all challenges,” he added.

“The players are well prepared for the Nations Cup and they worked hard and they have the desire to go far in the competition and fight for the title.”

Algeria, winners of the 1990 Nations Cup, are placed in Group C where they face one of the tournament favourites Senegal, Kenya and Tanzania.
