El-Hadary retires from international football
Essam El-Hadary, who this summer set a new record as the oldest player to ever feature at the World Cup, has announced his retirement from international football.
The 45-year-old made a double history with his appearance for Egypt against Saudi Arabia at the Russia 2018 tournament – becoming the oldest player to play at a World Cup and the oldest goalkeeper to save a penalty in the competition.
“Everything has a beginning and an end. After a long time of thinking, I decided to retire from playing internationally,” the former Ahly and Zamalek star revealed in a statement on Monday.
“Today, 22 years, 4 months and 12 days have passed since I played my first match with the Egyptian national team. I thought it’s the best moment to hang my gloves after Allah helped me achieve all my dreams with our beloved national team to please our great nation. Now, the moment I wasn’t waiting has come,” he noted.
El-Hadary recalled memories of his triumph in his 159 games with the Pharaohs feeling proud of winning the Africa Cup of Nations four times, 1998 2006 2008 and 2010 and being named the best goalkeeper in every of these tournaments.
“My biggest dream was to play at the World Cup and thank God for helping me write the name of my country in the history being the most-aged player ever at the tournament.
“I am very proud to have played with the national team in 159 internationals, participating in unprecedented achievements.
“I hope that I have succeeded in my mission over the past years. I extend my thanks and gratitude to my family, who have borne the difficulties of my life and supported me in all my steps,” he concluded.
El-Hadary will however continue his career at Egyptian club Ismaily after joining them in a free transfer in July.
