2018 Women’s Afcon: Seven other countries qualify to join Ghana
The teams to compete in the eight-nation 2018 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations tournament are now known.
Ghana, who are first-time hosts, have been joined by defending champions Nigeria, Cameroon, Mali, South Africa, Equatorial Guinea, Algeria and Zambia after sailing through the qualifying processes to the 11th edition of the competition on Monday.
Nigeria’s Super Falcons hammered The Gambia 7-0 over two legs while Cameroon, finalists in the last edition of the Women’s Afcon also sealed their place after beating Congo 10-0 on aggregate. So did South Africa against Lesotho.
Two-time winners Equatorial Guinea qualified with more hard work having to overturn a 2-1 first leg deficit by defeating Kenya by two unanswered goals at home to progress 3-2 on aggregate.
Mali and Zambia got the edge over Ivory Coast and Zimbabwe respectively on the away goal rule after playing a 2-2 draw over two legs.
Algeria will be the only North African rep at this year’s finals after beating Ethiopia 3-2 on aggregate.
The 2018 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations is scheduled for November 17 to December 1 with Accra and Cape Coast as host cities.
