Chan 2018: Ethiopia, Rwanda picked for play-off as Egypt pull out

With Egypt officially withdrawing from the 2018 African Nations Championship (Chan), Caf has picked Ethiopia and Rwanda to contest for the vacant slot to the competition.

The Egyptian FA earlier this week cited a timing clash as reason for the decision to pull out of the tournament.

An announcement on Caf’s website Saturday said: “the Executive Committee of the Confédération Africaine de Football has decided to schedule a match between Ethiopia and Rwanda to nominate the 16th national team qualified for the final tournament of the Total Africa Nations Championship, scheduled in Morocco from January 12 to February 4, 2018.”

Ghana, who failed to go past Burkina Faso in the qualifiers, had hoped to be get the chance to compete for the vacant slot but Caf explains it decided to pick teams from the East Zone of the qualifiers as “part of concern for fairness” thus bringing the number of teams representing the Central East Zone at the final tournament in Morocco to three.

The first leg will be played on November 5, 2017 in Ethiopia and the return a week later in Rwanda. Both teams were eliminated in the final round of the qualifiers in the East Zone.

The draw for the final tournament is scheduled for November 17, 2017.

The Total Chan, which is in its 5th edition, is a competition which gathers exclusively players evolving in the national championships of their respective countries.
