CHAN 2018: Former winners Libya dispatch Algeria, head to Kenya

After missing out on the last edition in Rwanda, 2014 CHAN winners Libya have sealed a return to the competition slated for Kenya next year.

The Libyans were held 1-1 by Algeria in the second leg of their third round qualifying tie at the adopted Stade Taïeb Mhiri in Sfax, Tunisia Friday night.

The result was however enough to see them progress to the Kenya tournament, having shocked the Fennec Foxes 2-1 at their own backyard the previous week.

Algeria took the lead in the 26th minute thanks to a strike from Sofiane Bendebka but were undone by some slack defending which saw Libya level matters prior to the break through Ellafi.

Libya managed to hold back constant pressure from the Algerians to record a 3-2 aggregate victory and are now back to the competition set for January 7 to February 2, 2018.

CHAN 2018 will be Libya’s third outing in five editions of the Championship which began in 2009. The qualification of the Libyan team is considered a big achievement as the country’s league has been suspended for two years now.
