VIDEO: AshantiGold bow out of Champions League

AshantiGold have been booted out of the 2016 CAF Champions League after a 3-1 loss to M.O Bejaia on Sunday at the Stade de l’Unite Maghrebin in Algeria.

The Ghanaian champions suffered a second leg thrashing by ‘The crabs’ on Sunday, making the aggregate scoreline 3-2 in favour of the Algerians after AshantiGold triumphed 1-0 in the first leg at the Obuasi Len Clay Stadium.

Coach Bashiru Hayford and his side were confident of getting a result that could have sent them through to the next stage of the competition with a very strong squad named before kickoff but they failed.

The Miners conceded early in the game after defender Hudu Yakubu had the ball in his own net unfortunately after 13 minutes of play. Emmanuel Osei found the equalizer for the Ghanaian champions with little time remaining before the break.

This seemed positive as AshantiGold came into the second half more positive but two goals from Soufiane Khadir in the 58th minute and Okacha Hamzaoui in the 64th minute for M.O Bejaia wrapped up qualification for the Algerian outfit.

This leaves AshantiGold out of the competition and a failure to end Ghana’s 3-year nemesis of going past the first round in Africa’s elite club competition. They also now miss the opportunity to play giants Club Africain in the next round, Bejaia will rather meet the Tunisian club who qualified on a 2-0 aggregate over AS Tanda from Cote d’Ivoire.

AshantiGold, who were Ghana’s only club playing in the CAF Champions League having exited the competition make Medeama SC the only club representing Ghana in the CAF Club competitions. Medeama will feature in the CAF Confederation Cup.
